Malawi, formerly the British colony of Nyasaland, obtained her independence in 1964. She has escaped the incessant violence besetting many African nations but has been ravaged by AIDS. This type was issued in 1971 on the occasion of the conversion from sterling to decimal coinage. It is accompanied by one, two, ten and twenty tambala and one kwacha, all common. The portrait is of Hastings Banda (1898-1997), president and Big Man of Malawi 1966-94.
