Künker sale 400, lot 247

This specimen was lot 247 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,152 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-WEIMAR, HERZOGTUM, Johann Ernst, 1662-1683. Reichstaler 1683, Weimar, auf seinen Tod. Von großer Seltenheit. Dunkle Patina, leicht berieben, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, John Ernest, 1662-83, thaler of 1683, Weimar mint, on his death. Extremely rare, dark toning, lightly tooled, extremely fine.)"

When Saxe-Middle-Weimar lapsed in 1640, a new Saxe-Weimar was created which lasted until World War One. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new polity was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
