Artois 1628 escalin
This specimen was lot 667 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €130 (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ARTOIS, Comté, Philippe IV (1621-1640), AR escalin, 1628 (sur 1627), Arras. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Tranche irrégulière. Très Beau. (county of Artois, Philip IV, 1621-40, silver escalin of 1628, 1628/7 overdate, Arras mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, bearing a sword and the oval arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Irregular edge, very Fine.)"
Tis type was struck at Arras 1623-28, 1631, 1634-35 as well as other mints in the Spanish Netherlands. Artois was conquered by France in 1640 and was formally ceded by Spain in 1659.
