Stack's Bowers September 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74435

This specimen was lot 74435 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Bamberg. 3 Kreuzer, 1753. Nurnberg Mint. Franz Conrad. NGC MS-66★. Struck to commemorate the death of Johann Philipp Anton. An extremely high grade example of this one-year type. Sharply struck with reflective surfaces. Superb. Ex: Wolff-Metternich Collection." Altho the bishops of Bamberg issued coins from heller up to multiple ducats, most years saw no issues at all. Memorial three kreuzer were issued in 1729, 1753 (shown here), 1757, 1779 and 1795. Franz Conrad's successor, Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, was also bishop of Wurzburg.
