Heritage sale 3026, lot 24560

This specimen was lot 24560 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XVIII 1/2 Franc 1819-T, MS63 NGC, deeply toned and attractive, a choice mint state example of this elusive date/mint. Listed, and pictured, on the web site of CGB (the publisher of the catalogue LeFranc, in their Collection Ideale as the finest known of this date and mint. Incorrectly listed on the web site as MS64." This dime-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of king Louis XVIII (1814-24) of France. It is a middle date of a type struck 1816-24. All half francs of this reign are of this type, which is fairly common. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 52 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is rare.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, plain edge. Designed by Auguste-François Michaut, 1786-1879.

Recorded Mintage: 1,735[2].
