Many countries, including the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands, have experimented with zinc coins but have generally found them unsuitable. Peru seems to be an exception as this denomination was issued in zinc 1950-65 along with a zinc two centavos. Zinc coins as a class are difficult to find in nice condition as the alloy corrodes readily.
Recorded mintage: 2,600,000 including a 1961/51 overdate.
Specification: 1.02 g, zinc, 14.98 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 227.
