Jean Elsen sale 143, lot 1660

This specimen was lot 1660 in Jean Elsen sale 143 (Brussels, December 2019), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,306 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux huit L, 1691L, Bayonne. 1er type. Réformation. D/ B. dr. à d. R/ Croix formée de huit L couronnés, cantonnée de quatre lis. Rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the 8 L's of 1691, Bayonne mint, first type, reformed. Obverse: draped bust right; reverse: cross formed of eight crowned "L's", cantonned with four lilies. Rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu aux 8 L struck in Toulouse during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1690-93 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus (flans reformés). It was succeeded by the écu aux palmes. Droulers[2] prices this date as fairly common as a flan reformé, but even a common date is priced two and a half times that of an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 17,700 + 71,385 flans reformées[2].

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 37-38 mm diameter, plain edge, this specimen 27,21 g.
