Saxe-Gotha 1636 ducat Fr-2944
This specimen was lot 2328 in Sincona sale 51 (Zurich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Sachsen-Coburg-Eisenach, Herzogtum, Johann Ernst, 1633-1638. Dukat 1636, Coburg. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt und kleiner Stempelfehler am Rand. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Ernest, 1633-38, ducat of 1636, Coburg mint. Very rare, Extremely fine, Slightly wavy flan and die faults at the edge.)"
Saxon ducats as a class are rare and this type is no exception. The death of the duke in 1638 caused the extinction of this particular principality. Friedberg and the SCWC list this type of 1635-36 under Saxe-Gotha, not Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.41 g.
