Künker sale 264, lot 3200

This specimen was lot 3200 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN Clemens XIII. 1758-1769. 2 Zecchini A VIII/1766, Rom. GOLD. RR Attraktives, fast vorzügliches Exemplar. (Papal States, Clement XIII, 1758-69, double zecchino of the year eight (1766), Rome mint. Rare, choice extremely fine.)"

The pope rarely had occasion to mint large gold coins and when he did, the doppia (5.46 g, 0.917 fine) was the usual choice and not the double ducat shown here, which was issued 1759 and 1766 only.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 6.9 g, .998 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6.85 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-236; Muntoni 2, KM 985, Ber-2889.
