This specimen was lot 20594 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $28,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nurnberg 1698 Peace and City View 4 Ducats, GERMANY. Nurnberg. Freie Reichsstadt. 4 Ducats, 1698-GFN. NGC AU-55. Mint Master Georg Friedrich Nurnberger. Standing Peace flanked by cherubs supporting City Arms, legend includes chronogram date, 'EXORNATA DIV PAX COE - LI EX MVNERE VENIT', Peace brings Divine Gifts from Heaven; Reverse: Hebrew 'JEHOVAH' in glory over intricate city view virtually identical to the 1688 coinage. 'MONETA REIPUB:/ NORIMBERGEN-/ SIS. 1698' in exergue, Coin of the Republic of Nurnberg. Here is a well-executed, wonderfully symbolic design of this great Free City, with bright gleam in the fields and slight wave in the flan. Incredibly desirable as a type, with a recent offering of a 5 Ducat of the same design bringing 66,000 Euros hammer in a November 2017 Auktionen Munzhandlung Sonntag auction. Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg Collection sold by American Numismatic Rarities, April 2005, Lot #280." This type was accompanied by a thaler (KM 230), 5 ducat (KM 232), 6 ducat (KM 235), 8 ducat (KM 240) and 9 ducat (KM 241).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 13.90 gms, 42.4 mm diameter.
