This specimen is one of a type struck at the Rio de Janeiro mint in Brazil 1777-86. The obverse portraits are of the queen, Maria I, and her uncle and husband, Peter III. Peter III died in 1786 and later issues of the date feature the queen alone, wearing a widow's veil.
Recorded mintage: 294,000 (including KM 218.1).
Specification: 14.34 g, 0.917 fine gold, .423 troy oz AGW.
