Mysore 1838 20 cash
This specimen was lot 72540 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Mysore. 20 Cash, 1838. Bangalore Mint. Krishnaraja Wodeyar III. PCGS VF-30. A delightful issue featuring a stylized lion and three languages (English, Persian, and Kannada), this example is evenly handled and entirely wholesome." Krishnaraja Wadiyar III was maharaja of Mysore after Hyder Ali and Tipu Ali were overthrown by the British. He himself was set aside by the British in 1831, who ruled the kingdom directly until 1881, when the state was restored to his adopted son, Chamarajendra Wadiyar X. Various copper 2½, five, ten and twenty cash were struck at Nagar and Mysore in the 1830's and 1840's. This type is listed for 1833-43 and has a low catalog value.
