Staffordshire 1811 penny token

Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72495

This specimen was lot 72495 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Trade Tokens. Staffordshire. Bilston. Copper Penny Token, 1811. PCGS MS-64 Brown. Obverse: Bust of George III right; Reverse: View of the royal exchange building. This most handsome and wholesome example delivers a rich amount of retained details, with some touches of mint red remaining, and strong details throughout the flan. A most pretty example of a less commonly encountered type." This is not, strictly speaking, a Conder token, being issued after the initial period of their popularity, but we have filed it there nevertheless.
