Sedwick sale 27, lot 1109

This specimen was lot 1109 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $1,130.50. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Guatemala, 1/4 real, 1863, NGC MS 66. Choice bold strike, lustrous satin-smooth fields and bold full rims, no marks at all, tied with one other for finest known in the NGC census. NGC #4770572-026." Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society. This type was struck in 1859-69 and this date is common.
