Sedwick sale 27, lot 1110

This specimen was lot 1110 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $309.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guatemala, 1/4 real, 1865, NGC AU 58. KM-130. Scarce date (mintage of just 23,000 coins), with bold strike and nice luster, minimal marks (should be MS in our estimation), tied with two others for second finest in NGC census behind a single MS 63. NGC #4770572-027." Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society. This type was struck in 1859-69 and this date is rare.

Recorded mintage: 23,000.

Specification: 0.76 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-130.
