Künker sale 384, lot 3202

This specimen was lot 3202 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €750 (about US$969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Dukat 1790. Mit Signatur M (Stempelschneider Franz Matzenkopf) unter dem Brustbild. GOLD. Fast vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803, ducat of 1790, with signature M below the bust. About extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1787-1802 for Hieronymus von Colloredo. It has a slightly modified shield on the reverse from the prior type (KM 437). It is probably the most common gold coin from this state. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.47 g.

Catalog reference: KM 463; Fr-880; Probszt 2405; Zöttl 3158 (Type 4).
