Jean Elsen sale 154, lot 1281
Brabant in 1559, from Shepherd's atlas

This specimen was lot 1281 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,358 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe II (1555-1598), AR écu Philippe, 1595, Anvers. D/ B. cuir. à g. R/ Ecu couronné avec écusson de Portugal en surtout, sur une croix de Bourgogne, entre deux briquets, portant le bijou de la Toison d'or. Extrêmement rare. Flan large. Nettoyé. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Philip II, 1555-98, silver écu Philippe of 1595, Antwerp mint. Obverse: armored bust left; reverse: crowned arms with the escutcheon of Portugal over a Burgundian cross between two firesteels bearing the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Extremely rare, large planchet, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1585-92, 1595-98. It varied from the earlier (Dav-8634) by having the arms of Portugal added.
