Künker sale 293, lot 1264

This specimen was lot 1264 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €6,000 (about US$8,087 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich August II. 1836-1854. Vereinsdoppeltaler 1841, G. Fleißprämie der Bergakademie zu Freiberg. Mit Randschrift: (Eisen und Schlägel gekreuzt) GOTT º SEGNE º DEN º BERGBAU. RR Nur 200 Exemplare geprägt. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Preussag Collection, Part I. Auktion London Coin Galleries/Künker 1, London 2015, Nr. 403. This very rare type is in the gray area between coin and medal, being issued as a prize for the mining academy in Freiberg. Davenport lists it in his section on "pseudo thalers". A similar prize double thaler was issued in 1857, also rare.
