Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41108
SB0123-41108r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41108 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Teston, 1562-D. Lyon Mint. Charles IX. NGC AU-53." Duplessy lists this type for 1562-72, one of several (Dupl-1063, -1067, -1069, -1071, -1072b, -1073) bearing the portrait of the boy king Charles IX. During the Wars of Religion, which broke out during his reign, the protestants seized and operated several mints. This subtype, struck only at Lyon, lacks the crowned "C's" or crowned "K's" on the reverse as seen on the products of the other mints. Sombart reports sixteen known of this date, making it common.

Recorded mintage: 140,836 including a few half testons.

Specification: 9.59 g, .899 fine silver, this specimen 9.41 g.

Catalog reference: Sb 4618 (24 examples reported), Dupl-1071.
