Spain 1875 10 centimos
This specimen was lot 987 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $363. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Carlos VII. Pretendiente, 1872-1909. CU 10 Centimos. Brussels mint; im: lis and flower. Dated 1875. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65 BN. Very strong hints of red coming through moderate brown surfaces. Choice Mint Stat[e]. Purchased from Sam Lopresto, February 1972." This is classed as a "pretender issue" as Don Carlos, nephew of Fernando VII, never controlled enough of Spain to be recognized as king. Enough worn examples exist to prove that the coin did circulate, if briefly. It is accompanied by a similar five centimos (KM 669).
