Jean Elsen sale 124, lot 957

This specimen was lot 957 in Jean Elsen sale 124 (Brussels, March 2015), where it sold for €315 (about US$393 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV louis d'or à la tête nue, 1787 B, Rouen. Droit: Tête nue à gauche, les cheveux longs. Revers: Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Griffes. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI (1774-93), gold louis of the bare head of 1787, Rouen mint. Obverse: bare head to left with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Scratches, very fine.)"

The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This date is priced about 80% higher than the common date (1787-A).

Recorded mintage: 30,229[1].

Specification: 7.65 g, .917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 7,62 g.

Catalog reference: Dupl., 1707; Gad-361; Fr-475. Dr/4 no. 881, Dr/2 no. 605.
