Sincona sale 70, lot 3025

This specimen was lot 3025 in Sincona sale 70 (Zurich, May 2021), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$431 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Aargau | Kanton, Halbbatzen 1829, Bern. FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (Switzerland, canton of Aargau, half batzen of 1829, Bern mint. Uncirculated, Magnificent condition.)"

The second specimen was lot 5007 in Sincona sale 80 (Zurich, October 2022), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,019 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "SWITZERLAND | Aargau | Kanton, Halbbatzen 1829, Bern. Uncirculated. Magnificent condition." After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. This type, listed in the SCWC as a five rappen, was struck 1829 and 1831 and is common. Five rappen = half batzen = 1/80 thaler.

Reported Mintage: 1,000.

Specification: silver or billon, the first specimen 2.07 g, the second specimen 1.90 g.

Catalog reference: KM 24, D.T. 204a. HMZ 2-24f.
