France 1790-N louis d'or

Goldberg sale 75, lot 3119

This specimen was lot 3119 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $805. The catalog description^[1] noted, "France. Louis d' or, 1790-N (Montpellier). Louis XVI. Bare head left. Reverse: Crown over two square shields. Weak areas in striking. Lustrous. Rare date. Very Fine to Extremely Fine." A rare issue from the Montpellier mint, which closed during the Revolution. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.
