In 1966, Australia abandoned the sterling coinage she had used since the days of Captain Cook and adopted the decimal dollar and cent. This bust of the queen was introduced in 1999 and still appears on the fifty cent coin. This is the regular issue, altho this denomination is often used for commemoratives, including KM 1578, 1697, 1712, 1741, 1741a, 1744, 1795, 1801, 1816, 1847, 1854, 1854a, 1855, 1856, 2020, 2037.

Recorded mintage: 17,600,000 plus 1,400 in silver plus a miniature version in gold (0.5 g, m. 2,000).

Specification: 15.55 g, copper-nickel, 31.65 mm diameter.
