Great Britain 1799 farthing
The first specimen was lot 33047 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "George III Proof Farthing 1799 PR65 Brown NGC. Struck to an incredible degree of detail, with individual hair tufts, garment folds, and shield lines projecting magnificently toward the viewer. Decidedly choice so fine." The second specimen was lot 34207 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[2] noted, "Great Britain: George III Proof 1/4 Farthing 1799-SOHO PR65 Brown NGC, Soho mint. A wonderful showcase of a scarcer and sought type, struck in bronzed copper, this beautifully reflective gem wields crisp devices and a soft aquamarine patina along the edge that blends nicely to the nutmeg body." This type of 1799 is the only issue of copper farthings between 1775 and 1805. Despite a desperate shortage of small change which permitted the issue of a profusion of counterfeits and private tokens, the mint made little effort to produce copper coins until the 1820's. This farthing was accompanied by a half penny. The similar pennies and tuppence were dated 1797 tho restruck until the 1840's.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: copper (KM 646), gilt copper (KM 646a), bronze plated copper (KM 646b).
