Italy 1912-R 50 lire
This specimen was lot 2476 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,800 (about US$3,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"50 Lire 1912. Rom. Fast vorzüglich.vorzüglich. (kingdom of Italy, Victor Emanuel III, fifty lire of 1912, nice extremely fine.)"
This rare type was struck 1910, 1912, 1926, 1927, all rare. Several countries, including France, Spain, Venezuela and Great Britain, issued large gold coins around the turn of the century to celebrate the permanence of the gold standard, to be shattered a few years later by World War One.
