Saxe-Old Gotha 1625-WA 2 thaler Dav-LS413b
This specimen was lot 1276 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM Johann Casimir, 1624-1633. Breiter doppelter Reichstaler 1625, Saalfeld. R Patina, kl. Henkelspur, Felder leicht geglättet, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimer, 1624-33, wide double thaler of 1625, Saalfeld mint. Scarce, toned, mount mark, tooling in the fields, very fine.)"
As these large pieces were given out as prizes at shooting festivals and the like, it is not surprising that most survivors have been mounted. This variety was minted 1624-26. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
Specification: 58 g, silver, this specimen 57.34 g.
