Künker sale 263, lot 786

This specimen was lot 786 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,100 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG-CELLE, FÜRSTENTUM Christian Ludwig, 1648-1665. Löser zu 3 Reichstalern 1654, Clausthal. Mit Wertpunze; RR Fassungsspuren, sehr schön. (Germany, principality of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Celle, Christian Louis, 1648-65, triple thaler of 1654, Clausthal mint, with denomination punched in. Rare, mounted, very fine.)"

The Duchy of Brunswick was divided and subdivided in the seventeenth century but was eventually reassembled as the Kingdom of Hannover before being absorbed into Prussia in 1866. The Brunswick dukes seem to have become enamored of multiple thalers and issued more different types than any other locale.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 85,68 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-LS156; Duve 3 II; Welter 1485, KM 230.
