Künker sale 335, lot 4340

This specimen was lot 4340 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, SACHSEN-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM, Friedrich III. von Gotha, 1741-1755, als Administrator. Reichstaler 1755, Eisenach, auf die 200-Jahrfeier des Augsburger Religionsfriedens. Mit Randschrift. Slg. Merseb. 3236 und 4114. Feine Patina, leichte Justierspuren, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Eisenach, Frederick III of Gotha, 1741-55, as administrator, thaler of 1755, Eisenach mint, on the bicentennial of the peace of Augsburg, with edge lettering. Fine patina, light adjustment marks, about extremely fine.)"

Altho the auctioneers listed this lot under Saxe-Eisenach, that dynasty lasted only 1671-1741. We have joined the SCWC in filing this rare type under Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, the result of the merger between Saxe-Eisenach and Saxe-Weimar. The new state survived until World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.80-29.33 g, 41.5 mm diameter, this specimen 29,28 g.
