Vaud 1845 franc
This specimen was lot 21542 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Vaud. Franc, 1845. PCGS MS-65. Struck to commemorate the Shooting Festival held on August 10, 1845 and a coin which had legal tender status. What must be one of the most beautiful examples of the type extant. Fabulous multi-color toning coalesces on the surface in a spectacular display. Highly reflective mirroring in the fields suggests a proof or specimen striking, though not indicated as such on the holder. Finest graded at PCGS. A Swiss coin with unparalleled aesthetic appeal that is sure to see keen competition for ownership." This is the only issue of this denomination from the canton. It is not rare, despite the paltry mintage; being a commemorative, it was saved. The franc superseded the old ten batzen. The cantons were formally federated in 1848 and the cantonal issues ceased.
