from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72193

This is an écu de France-Navarre of the Aix mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. This specimen was lot 72193 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1719-&. Louis XV (1715-1774). NGC MS-62. Aix mint. Good strike, toned with strong underlying luster." Droulers[2] notes the 1719-& as fairly available but not as common as the type coin, 1718-A. The specimen shown is struck on a "flan neuf." The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin.

Recorded mintage: 321,120[2].

Specification: 24.47 g, .917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
