Jean Elsen sale 133, lot 1241

This specimen was lot 1241 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,115 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AV double louis d'or aux quatre L, 1698A, Paris. D/ T. âgée à d., coiffée d'une grande perruque laurée. R/ Croix formée de quatre lis couronnés, cantonnée de quatre L. Rare Griffes. presque Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold double louis of the four "L's" of 1698, Paris mint. Obverse: laureate, peruked, aged bust to right; reverse: cross formed of four crowned fleurs-de-lys, four "L's" in the fields. Rare, scratches, very fine.)"

This type is usually found struck over older coins, a process involving all French silver and gold coinage during 1690-1709. These "reformations" were the result of financial manipulations too tedious to discuss here. The double louis d'or à l'écu was succeeded by the double louis d'or aux 4 L struck 1693-1700. Droulers[2] prices this issue as the most common date. This specimen is a little light and the rims look a little tight, hinting that it may have been clipped and re-edged.

Recorded mintage: 38,000 on new blanks + 40,132 "reformed".

Specification: 13.5 g, .917 fine gold, reeded edge, 28-30 mm diameter, designed by Joseph Roëttiers, this specimen: 12,04 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 399, Dupl. 1439; Gad-260; Fr-432, KM 303.4.
