The first specimen was lot 40498 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $911. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu, 1698-X. NGC MS-63. Louis XIV (1643-1715). Struck over a 1690-A 1/2 Ecu. Light attractive toning." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in Amiens during the reign of Louis XIV. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older demi-écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux insignes. Droulers does not list this date.
