Künker Auction 425, lot 2291

This specimen was lot 2291 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,691 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM Karl Theodor, 1743-1799. Konv.-Taler 1790, Mannheim, auf das Vikariat. Kabinettstück. Herrliche Patina, fast Stempelglanz/Stempelglanz. (Germany, electorate of the Palatinate, Charles Theodore, 1743-99, convention thaler of 1790, Mannheim mint, on the vicariat. Cabinet example, superb patina, about uncirculated.)"

Karl Theodor inherited the electorate of Bavaria on the death of its incumbent in 1777, thus uniting all the branches of the Wittelsbach family. He served as vicar of the eempire on the death of Joseph II in 1790 and this thaler commemorates that event. Lacking legitimate heirs, his realm passed to a cousin, Maximilian I Joseph, duke of Zweibrücken.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27,96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 481, Slg. Memmesh. 2577; Haas 289; Dav-1972; Hahn 399; Slg. Kömmerling (Auktion UBS 65) 590.
