Sincona sale 83, lot 4550

This specimen was lot 4550 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$669 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND Grisons, Haldenstein, Herrschaft, Thomas I. von Schauenstein-Ehrenfels, 1609-1628. Dicken o. J., Haldenstein. Hüftbild des Freiherrn mit Bart nach links. Keine Kopfbedeckung. Rechte Hand mit Zepter, die Linke angewinkelt am Schwertgriff. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler mit Nimben und Kreuz. Gutes sehr schön. Justiert (lordship of Haldenstein, Thomas I. von Schauenstein-Ehrenfels, 1609-1628, undated dicken, Haldenstein mint. Obverse: half-length bearded bust of the the baron facing left, holding a scepter and gripping the hilt of a sword; reverse: crowned doubleheaded eagle with halo and cross. Good very fine, Adjustment marks)." Haldenstein was a barony in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland. It is about two miles down the river Rhine from the town of Chur, which also issued coins. The last coins are dated 1695. This is the plate coin in the SCWC, which attributes it to 1616. Other examples are known dated 1617.
