Sincona sale 90, lot 1393

This specimen was lot 1393 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$925 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Savoyen / Sardinien, Carlo Emanuele I. 1580-1630. Ducato d'oro 1603, Torino. Sehr schön. Gewellt. (Italy, duchy of Savoy, Charles Emanuel I, 1580-1630, gold ducat of 1603, Turin mint. Very fine, Wavy flan.)"

This rare type is also listed for 1601-02. None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the seventeenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720. The duke was known as the king of Sardinia until his descendants claimed the throne of unified Italy in 1860.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, .109 troy oz ASW, this specimen 3.41 g.
