Savoy (1605)-T 2 doppie Fr-1048
This specimen was lot 3752 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States - Savoy. 2 Doppie, ND (1605) T. Carlo Emannuele I, 1580-1630. Small bust with high collar to right. Reverse: Crowned shield of Savoy house in baroque frame. Very Rare. NGC graded AU-58." Altho a KM number was given in the auction catalog listing, this author could not find it in the SCWC. This enigmatic coin may safely be deemed rare. None of the silver or gold coins of Savoy of the seventeenth century can be called common. In 1714, the duke's successful participation in the War of the Spanish Succession garnered him the island of Sicily, which he traded for Sardinia in 1720. The duke was known as the king of Sardinia until his descendants claimed the throne of unified Italy in 1860.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.2 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 13.35 grams.
