Sincona sale 39, lot 3628

This specimen was lot 3628 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 100 CHF (about US$120 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Königreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715 Quart decu à la mèche courte 1645 D. Lyon. Selten. Sehr schön. Kleiner Kratzer auf Vorderseite. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, quarter écu of the short lock of 1645, Lyon mint. Rare. Very fine. Small scratch on obverse.)"

The specimen shown is a quart d'écu à la mèche courte struck in Lyon during the minority of Louis XIV of France (r. 1643-1715). This is a "short lock" variety. The "long lock" variety, struck 1646-60, is distinguished by the longer lock of hair growing in front of the young king's ear. Altho most of the "short lock" variety was struck 1643-45, about seven million were minted in that time, so the type is not rare. This specimen appears to be a 1645/4 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 462,204.

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27-29 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin or Isaac Briot. This specimen is 6.72 g.
