Künker sale 263, lot 944

This specimen was lot 944 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €360 (about US$465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN-DARMSTADT, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, Ludwig IX. 1768-1790. Konv.-Taler 1770, Darmstadt. R Sehr schön. (Landgraviate of Hesse-Darmstadt, Louis IX, 1768-90, convention thaler of 1770, Darmstadt mint. Scarce, very fine.)"

The landgrave was only an occasional issuer of thalers and most are scarce. This one and Dav-2333 are the most available for the eighteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.
