Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 1927
JE160-1927r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1927 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,811 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon III (1852-1870), AV 5 francs, 1855 A, Paris. Grand module. Seulement 1352 p. frappées. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon III, gold five francs of 1855, Paris mint, large module, only 1,352 pieces struck. Extremely rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The gold five francs was introduced in 1854 with a 14.4 mm diameter. This proving inconvenient, it was revised in mid-1855 to increase the diameter to 16.7 mm with no change in weight. It was struck in this format until 1860; only the 1855-A is rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,346[2].

Specification: 1.63 g, 0.900 fine gold, 16.7 mm diameter, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: F.501/1, KM-787.1; Gad-1001; Fr-578a.
