Sincona sale 77, lot 2983

This specimen was lot 2983 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Osterreich. II. Republik, seit 1945. 2 Schilling 1952, Wien. Gutes vorzüglich. (second republic of Austria, since 1945, two schillings of 1952, Vienna mint. Good extremely fine.)"

This type was also struck 1946-47; the other dates are common. Austria began minting euros in 2002, rendering this coin obsolete. The old Hapsburg eagle clasped an orb and scepter, symbols of imperial power; the republican eagle holds a hammer and sickle, symbols of the hard work needed to rebuild from the disaster of World War Two.

Recorded mintage: 148,500 + proofs.

Specification: 2.8 g, aluminum, 28 mm diameter, plain edge. This specimen is 2.79 g.
