CNG Lissner sale, lot 1360

This specimen was lot 1360 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $6,050. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Republic. 1818-present. AV 8 Escudos. Santiago mint. Dated 1845 So IJ. In NGC encapsulation graded UNC DETAILS/Surface Hairlines. This coin is one of the most beautiful of this early Standing Liberty type we have seen. Fully lustrous choice BU. Faint hairlines invisible without magnification. A real quality coin in spite of the hairlines. A three year only type, with the highest graded specimen being MS 62. Purchased from Frank Lapa, May 1971." This is a late date of a series struck 1839-45. There is an later standing liberty type, struck 1846-51, where liberty is resting her hand on the book of the law instead of the pedestal shown here. Neither type is rare but prices of these coins have surged in recent years. Chile converted to decimal coinage in the 1850's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, lettered edge, this specimen Ø35 mm, 27.07 g, 6h axis.
