Sweden 1776-OL 1/3 riksdaler
This specimen was lot 31790 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $381.88. The catalog description[1] noted, "Gustaf III 1/3 Riksdaler 1776-OL, AU55 NGC. Nicely toned and original, tiny planchet clip at the top. Ex: "'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." This denomination was introduced in 1776 to replace the two mark. It must have been a success, as this type was struck 1776-90 in large numbers and is common today. In 1778, the reverse was modified to drop the "I D. S. M." (one daler silber mynt).
Recorded mintage: 97,000.
Specification: 9.75 g, .878 fine silver.
