This specimen was lot 1376 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,910. The catalog description[1] noted, "1826 I 1 escudo. Santiago mint. MS-64 (NGC). Types as above. Rich greenish gold with traces of attractive coppery toning in the recesses. Highly lustrous, reflective, well struck and well centered. A beautiful near gem. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1824-34 and was succeeded by the "hand on book" type (1838) and "standing liberty" type (1839-51). None of the recorded mintages are large.

Recorded mintage: 4,280.

Specification: 3.3 g, .875 fine gold, .093 troy oz AGW, 19 mm diameter; this specimen: 3.35 grams, 19.30 mm diameter.
