Goa 1776 rupia
This specimen was lot 71055 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. PORTUGUESE INDIA. Goa. Rupia, 1776. Joseph I (1750-77). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, VF Details Secure Holder. Light scratches on bust hardly distracting. Toned with nice contrast on a compact planchet." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By 1782, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This rupia was struck 1755-77.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.6-11.8 g, .917 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-160.
