The Indian Head cent was issued starting in 1859, superseding the Flying Eagle cent. The reverse was modified in 1860 and the alloy revised in 1864, after which the type was produced essentially unchanged until the introduction of the Lincoln cent in 1909. The specimen shown is a proof.

Specification: 3.11 g, bronze, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.

Recorded mintage: 4,042,000. a scarce date.
