Künker Auction 425, lot 1552

This specimen was lot 1552 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €26,000 (about US$36,816 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · PADERBORN, BISTUM Franz Arnold von Wolff-Metternich zur Gracht, 1704-1718. Dukat 1713, Paderborn. FRANC · ARNOLD · D · G · EP · PADERB · ET · MONASTER · Brustbild in geistlichem Ornat r.//BURGG · STROM · S · R · I · P · C · PYRM · ET · D · IN · BOR · 1713 Mit Fürstenhut bedeckter, neunfeldiger Wappenschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Nur wenige Exemplare bekannt. Prachtexemplar von schönster Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, bishopric of Paderborn, Francis Arnold of Wolff-Metternich, 1704-18, ducat of 1713, Paderborn mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: capped ninefold arms, crozier and sword behind. Extremely rare, only a few pieces known, cabinet piece in beautiful condition, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

The bishop of Paderborn was suffragan to the bishop of Münster (Franz Arnold held both thrones) but still managed to issue a few coins for his domain. Bishop Clemens August was also archbishop of Cologne and bishop of Liege. The bishopric was annexed to Prussia in 1803, during Napoleon's reorganization of Germany.
