Schulman 385-0269r.jpg

This specimen was lot 269 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €100 (about US$142 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ZWOLLE. Leeuwendaalder, 1663, Silver Type V. Ridder met pluim naar rechts achter Hollands wapenschild MO. ARG. CONFOE. - BELG. CIV. ZWOL. Kz. klimmende leeuw, jaartal en mmt. 5-bladige bloem na omschrift CONFIDENS. DNO: NON. MOVETVR. Fraai +. (city of Zwolle, lion dollar of 1663, type V. Obverse: knight with plumed helmet stands behind the Dutch arms; reverse: lion rampant left, date in legend with five petalled rosette as mintmark. Fine or better.)"

Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands along with a few half daalders. This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zwolle for 1661-67, 1674-79, 1685-88 and 1692 and is fairly common. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel. The municipal mints' habit of coining to short weight and short alloy infuriated the Estates General, which spent most of the seventeenth century on a campaign to close them all.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver; this specimen 27.27 g.
