Schulman 385-0260r.jpg

This specimen was lot 260 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €200 (about US$283 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ZWOLLE. Leeuwendaalder, 1639, Silver Type IIIa. Ridder achter stadswapen naar rechts .MO. ARG. CIVITA. - .ZWOLL. IMP. Kz. klimmende leeuw tussen jaartal ❀ DA. PACEM. DOMINE. IN. DIEBVS. NOST. Interessante dubbelslag op de keerzijde. Zeer fraai. (city of Zwolle, lion dollar of 1639, type IIIa. Obverse: standing knight faces right behind the city arms; reverse: lion rampant divides the date. Double struck on the reverse, very fine.)"

Lion daalders were struck in most of the provinces that today make up the Netherlands. The SCWC notes two different leeuwendaalders for 1639: KM 36/Dav-4882 (lion with shield, struck 1637 and 1639, quite scarce) and KM 38/Dav-4883 (lion without shield, struck 1639-46, fairly common, shown here). This type is recorded in the SCWC for Zwolle for 1639-46. Other lion daalders are recorded from Zwolle for 1637-39, 1641-55, 1661-92. Zwolle is a town in the province of Overijssel.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver; this specimen 26.85 g.
