Stephen Album sale 47, lot 930
Haider Ali's dominions in 1780

This specimen was lot 930 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "MYSORE: Tipu Sultan, 1782-1799, AR 1/4 rupee (baqiri), Patan, AM1218 year 8, an attractive toned nearly mint state example, PCGS graded AU58. Ex Dr. Axel Wahlstedt Collection." The Indian state of Mysore, under her rulers Haider Ali (1761-82) and Tipu Sultan (1782-99), was a serious thorn in the side of the British Raj. This type was struck AM 1216-AM 1224 and was accompanied by a 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 rupee.
